When do I need a TV licence?


You need a TV licence to watch any live broadcast TV in the UK. This means programmes that are being aired live, whether you are watching them on a TV set or online, but not pre-recorded content. The only exception is BBC iPlayer, which requires a TV licence from all their viewers, even if you are watching recorded programmes. 


Do I need a TV licence to watch cable or digital TV? 

Yes, if you are watching broadcast TV in the UK you must have a TV licence, regardless of if you have a digital or cable package with a television provider like Sky, BT or Virgin Media. 


Do I need a TV licence to watch Netflix, Amazon Prime or other streaming services?

No, if you are using your TV to watch pre-recorded programming through a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon Prime, or a catch-up service, you do not need a TV licence. The only exception is the BBC catch-up service BBC iPlayer which is only available to TV licence payers. Otherwise, a TV licence is only a requirement for watching live broadcast TV.
