What are business rates for energy?

Business rates are tariffs charged for energy usage by businesses and at commercial properties. This could be in place at your property either because a business was previously in operation there, or because it has not been switched back to domestic after construction was completed on the property.

You should reach out to your current electricity supplier directly, before paying any bills, explaining that the property has had domestic use only since the beginning of your tenancy. They will be able to update the records for the property, and issue you a bill based on the correct tariffs.
