I've received a bill addressed to someone else

There may be a period between arriving at your new property and your registrations being finalised where you receive letters from your utility suppliers that are not addressed to you by name. Bills addressed to 'resident' or 'the occupier' are sent out as soon as a house is empty, and you can ignore these if we're handling your registrations unless it's been more than six weeks since your move.

Pass on any bills addressed to previous occupants to the property owner or agent, or return them to sender marked 'not at this address'. Once your accounts have been finalised you should stop receiving any mail that's not intended for you. if you receive any closing bills or other contact intended for the previous occupant after this point you can forward them, return them to the sender or destroy them, but you should also let your suppliers know that that occupant does not live with you as they may still be using your new address.
