How can I check if my energy meters are faulty?

How can I check if my energy meters are faulty?

If you believe your energy meters aren't recording your energy usage accurately there are two simple tests you can perform yourself to check.

Creep Test

Turn off your power at the fuse box.

Wait five minutes and if the reading on your meter is still increasing it's highly likely the meter is faulty. It will still need to be tested by your energy supplier.

If the numbers do not increase then it's less likely there's a fault with the meter itself, and you should perform a load test.

Load Test

When turning the appliances in your home back on, turn them on one by one and leave 10-15 minutes between each. Check the meter each time, and see if there is a particular appliance that causes a jump in usage. If there is, the fault is more likely to be with this appliance specifically rather than your meter.

If you see any problems with your meter when doing this test, or if you still believe the meter is faulty, there are further tests your energy supplier can run to check for problems. There is usually a cost associated with having an engineer perform these tests, but if your meter is found to be faulty you will not be charged.
